On September 22nd, I along with 75 other bloggers, journalists and writers will participate in an online media campaign to raise awareness and brainstorm solutions to the problem of unmarried childbearing.
The campaign called No Wedding, No Womb (NWNW) seeks to describe, discuss and debate the consequences of unmarried childbearing particularly in communities of color.
My interest in this issue is both personal and professional. As a woman of color, I am concerned about the destabilizing effects of unmarried childbearing in the black community. Similarly, as a public health professional I am aware of the correlation between unmarried childbearing and potentially suboptimal physical and psychological health for women and children.
As part of the NWNW campaign, I will begin a series of posts that examine and discuss the health effects of unmarried childbearing in communities of color. My hope is illuminate the long-term physical and mental toll so that we may take the necessary steps to ameliorate them.
Please join with us on September 22nd. No Wedding, No Womb!
